Meet the photographer sending newspapers instead of emails
Email newsletters weren't cutting it for photographer and creative director Max Hemphill. "Most of my outreach got lost in inboxes," says...

More than 150 photographers gathered in London last week for Photo Meet, an annual portfolio review that brings together photographers with curators, editors and industry experts from Vogue, the Financial Times, Monocle, Tate and many more.
Founded in 2015, Photo Meet has become a lively meeting point for contemporary photography in the UK. This also marked the third year the team has published Reboot Magazine alongside the event. Printed as a tabloid newspaper, it features work from every participating photographer – more than 150 artists in total (see the full list below).
This year’s edition was edited and curated by Helena Velez Olabarria, bringing together a wide-ranging collection of visual approaches that reflect the breadth of contemporary photographic practice today.

Attendees take home copies and additional issues are distributed to photo agencies, universities and creative venues across the UK. The publication serves both as an archive of the year’s Photo Meet event and as an ongoing platform for photographers to share their work beyond the review sessions.
“We want to create a legacy for the photographers and share the work with influential people in the industry,” says Photo Meet founder Mimi Mollica. “Photography is not about something that you see on the screen. Photography must be tangible.”

"The quality of printing is absolutely incredible. The paper is fantastic, it's silky. This newspaper reminds you what photography is truly about."
We stopped by the event to chat with some of the featured photographers about their images, including Karina Lax, who took the cover photo that Mimi describes as "haunting, but not aggressively haunting." You can hear what they said on Instagram.

The event concludes with three photographers selected for the Best Portfolio Awards, voted by all the reviewers. This year’s winners were Ron Timehin, Jess Govinden and Yushy Pachnanda. They'll each receive a £100 printing voucher from Newspaper Club. Congratulations!
At a time when much photography is consumed digitally and fleetingly, Photo Meet and Reboot Magazine emphasise the value of printed photographic work and face-to-face connections. We're already looking forward to next year.
Reboot Magazine is printed as a digital tabloid on 55gsm improved newsprint.
