Hamptons gossip and translated poetry: 6 newspapers we loved in August

Somehow, it’s our last print roundup of the summer. Where did August go? This batch of newspapers feels like a final snapshot of the season: a dispatch from the Hamptons, a magazine marking the end of an internship, a keepsake from the Commonwealth Games (in our home city of Glasgow!) and more below.

Internship Magazine

Format: Digital midi / Paper: 55gsm recycled newsprint

Film programmer and editorial designer Talulla Torthe took on a “dream internship” this summer at Sight and Sound, the monthly magazine published by the British Film Institute since 1932.

As a parting gift she put together a “mockumagazine” – part thank you, part clever job application – featuring film reviews and an excerpt from her MA Publishing dissertation (on zines!)

“I wanted to leave the team with something that showed my gratitude, but also the knowledge and skills that I picked up during my time there,” says Talulla. “It was so fun getting home in the evenings and putting what I had learnt to use right away.”

The Hamptons Chronicle

Format: Digital tabloid / Paper: 55gsm recycled newsprint

Local news is having something of a revival on Substack. That’s where The Hamptons Chronicle (THC) started in May, but print is in founder Rory Satra’s blood: her grandfather and great-grandfather ran small newspapers and magazines in northern Wisconsin (one was all about snowmobiles).

She’s also a former columnist and editor at The Wall Street Journal. All of which is to say a print edition of THC was bound to happen – and we’re thrilled that it’s on our tabloids.

The first newspaper came out in July, covering things like backyard vineyards (“highly impractical and deeply romantic”), summer shoplifting and the buzziest chicken salads in town. There are also plenty of juicy scoops from “a place with two of the highest-networth zip codes in the U.S.”

“This project is very home-grown but with big ambitions,” says art director Nathaniel Kilcer. “It's a thrill to see people pick up the physical copy. Sometimes they’ll share it on social media, which has created an interesting digital to analog and back to digital loop.”

The Kitten Times

Format: Digital broadsheet / Paper: 55gsm recycled newsprint

Stop the purrrr-esses! London-based writer Stacey Yu released her debut novel, Kitten, this summer and marked the occasion with two editions of The Kitten Times – one for the UK cover and one for the US. Copies were placed on seats at readings and featured in the in-store display at Foyle’s bookshop in Charing Cross.

Designer Tatum Van Dam used our vintage Canva template as a starting point for the broadsheets. “The process was really collaborative,” she says. “Stacey had so many cute ideas, like the crossword puzzle and cat portraits, and I added an analogue-flair, drawing inspiration from the different cover designs.”

The Helen Herald

Format: Traditional broadsheet / Paper: 52gsm recycled newsprint

Helen Levi’s ceramics business started as a one-woman production line in 2013. Today she works with a small team (including two studio cats) from her studio in Queens, NY, making her popular marbled mugs and other playful pottery.

This month she printed a broadsheet edition of her email newsletter, The Helen Herald – and happened to be visiting the UK at the same time! We invited her to see the Newspaper Club press in action and she made a delightful video about it.

"When I returned home to New York, my newspapers had beat me there and were waiting at the studio," says Helen. "I love the giant scale of the broadsheet newspaper. It feels only right since they were printed on such big machines."

Changes Review

Format: Digital tabloid / Paper: 45gsm salmon newsprint

Changes Review is a biannual publication from NYC-based Changes Press, showcasing “vividness and risk in poetry and translation.” This issue, the fourth printed with Newspaper Club, features work translated from French, Spanish and Galician.

“We like the idea of readers engaging in poetry and translation in a quick and ephemeral, on-the-go format,” says editor Isabel Boutiette. “A newspaper is particularly suited for reading in public spaces.”

It’s designed by Vance Wellenstein and on the back of each issue, in oversized text, is the Changes slogan: “As variously as possible." It's an excerpt from the inscription on American poet Frank O'Hara’s gravestone: “Grace to be born and live as variously as possible.”

The Clyde Post

Format: Traditional tabloid / Paper: 52gsm recycled newsprint

More than 3,000 athletes from around the world competed in this year’s Commonwealth Games, hosted in our home city of Glasgow. There were 39 medals for Team Scotland – and a copy of The Clyde Post for everyone!

Team Scotland worked with local Glasgow design agency Loop to create the souvenir newspaper, printed on our tabloids. “We wanted athletes and supporters to have a printed keepsake of their time at the Games,” says senior designer Stacey Horsfall. “We knew it had to be big, bold and packed with pride.” Peter Burt did the cover illustration, which features Team Scotland's thistle-y mascot, Clyde.
