Boarding school is a paradoxical “home-away-from-home”, since it is also the home of every other boarder. This creates a tension between the institution and the individual, as difficulties of creating a personal, private space within a public, shared environment. The signs and signifiers of institutional control are everywhere to see. I have attempted to recreate my sense of a community that I did not feel a part of; a school that no matter how full it was, always felt empty.
