Recently named Maker of the Year by Western Living magazine, Canadian designer Vikki Wiercinski has built a following with her bright, midcentury-inspired patterns. She set up Mezzaluna Studio in 2015, where she sells tea towels, stationery and calendars silkscreened with her abstract designs.

To showcase her new line, Wiercinski needed something "inexpensive to print and a little unexpected,” she tells us. "I wanted it to show off all my work at a glance – a large broadsheet spread was the perfect option!"

Notes on Feeds, part of Printed Web #5: Bot Anthology, is the latest edition and will be launching at Printed Matter's NY Art Book Fair  later this month.

Things photographer Ross Martin spotted while walking his dog inspired his FRUITS series. It evolved into a portrait project, which Martin printed as a digital tabloid to send to art directors and photo editors. (Pro tip: Before printing his full run, Martin ordered a single test copy to "really hone in all the colors and layout to make things perfect.”)

"I had never printed in CMYK before and was a little nervous with how the images would print,” says Martin. “But 90gsm bright paper was a great combination of newsprint feel and vibrant colors that fit perfectly with the project. I couldn't have been more happy with the results!"

Het Groene Blad

Architecture students Alba Tavares Vanhoutte and Leendert De Vos are graduating from Ghent University soon – Het Groene Blad is part of their masters thesis.

The project explores housing in the suburbs of Flanders. "We wanted the publication to look like an info brochure for residents of the neighbourhood,” says De Vos, who explains that in Dutch there’s a pun in the title – it translates to something like “The Green Leaf(let).”

Savoy Unit 72

Digital tabloid printed on 55gsm improved newsprint

In May, photography students Ka Ki Wong and Joanne Cheung set up a pop-up photo studio in the Savoy Centre, one of Glasgow’s Brutalist landmarks. Operating from a disused shop – they kept the name of the former business, Head to Toe – they offered free portraits for shoppers and employees.

Savoy Unit 72 is the resulting photozine, printed as a digital tabloid. The images brim with the "good grace and bit of camp" that Wong and Cheung say characterise the Glaswegian spirit. "The texture of newsprint suits the aesthetic of the project,” they tell us. “And the large format offers an eye-catching, cheerful result."

The Social Bite

Every day, Social Bite feeds more than 150 homeless people in Scotland. The not-for-profit cafes offer job training, too, and 1 in 4 employees are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Social Bite's first newspaper coincides with their 5th birthday, and celebrates the important work they've done so far.

“The newspaper is immediately eye-catching, readable and, most importantly, pick-up-able,” designer Jez Dunn tells us. "We don’t even have to point it out – people immediately gravitate towards it.” She says they've been leaving The Social Bite on tables in the cafes and distributing it with corporate deliveries. "It fits unobtrusively in a handbag or folded in a pocket,” adds Dunn. "It has that retro appeal and we love it!"
