Dallas-based creative studio Matchbox shows off striking visual work in their latest promo, a traditional tabloid printed on 70gsm improved newsprint.
The portfolio is a versatile collection of projects for clients ranging from FedEx to the State Fair of Texas (home of the deep-fried Twinkie). It's called The Work, and this issue is the first in a series of promos they'll be mailing throughout the year.
Matchbox took a straightforward approach to the publication, with full-page images (like the monocle-wearing bulldog below) and minimal text. They wrapped a bold red sleeve around the newspaper – a simple, tidy way to bookend the varied projects within.
The Work is printed on our 70gsm improved paper – slightly heavier than standard newsprint, it combines the look and feel of newspaper with the sturdiness of high-quality paper. It's a bit brighter, too, and Matchbox's punchy colours really pop against this paper.
"We wanted to show off our work in a fun and inexpensive way," says Matchbox's Zach Hale. "A newspaper promo was an awesome solution – we love the tactile and visual aesthetic of newsprint over a more traditional paper stock."
Every element of the portfolio demonstrates Matchbox’s considered approach to design, right down to the neat way they've packaged it all up for mailing.
