What is a “Page”?
A lot of people ask us what we mean by a “page”, and what they’re getting when they get a 12 page newspaper. Some of the confusion comes from the way newspapers are printed and folded. So we’ll try and explain.
First up, some definitions.
A sheet is a single piece of paper. Like this:
There’s four pages on this. Two on the front, two on the back.
So, here’s one page:
And a spread is two pages side-by-side. Like this:
To give yourself an idea of a 12 page newspaper, get any old newspaper lying around and take out all but three sheets.
You can see that page 1 is the front cover, and page 12 the back cover. Pages 6 and 7 are the centre spread – that’s the only spread that’s printed on the same piece of paper, so pictures can run across both pages without any breaks.
